Officials punished for faulty cable scandal
EIGHT employees from a cable manufacturer have been arrested for allegedly producing substandard cables for Xi'an subway in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, the State Council announced today after it started an investigation into the faulty cable scandal.
In March this year, a whistleblower posted an article online claiming that the cables used in Xi'an subway Line 3 were substandard and could cause a fire. The post soon circulated on social media and triggered an investigation. Later tests showed that none of the five samples of Aokai low voltage cables taken from Line 3 met the standard. Cables of Aokai were also found used in the city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province.
The State Council requires accountability on 122 government officials, including 64 senior officials. Criminal investigations will also be opened to 19 people of state-owned enterprises involved in this case.
The cable manufacturer Shaanxi Aokai Cable Co Ltd faces a revocation of its business licenses and industrial production permit.
All the substandard cables in Xi'an were asked to be changed, along with those used in construction projects in other cities.
The State Council also calls for a nationwide inspection on cable production and crackdown on fakes and unfair competition.
