Officials punished over woman鈥檚 suicide attempt

Traffic officials in Yongcheng, a city in Henan Province, have been punished after a woman tried to kill herself over fines for overloaded trucks despite claiming she had paid for immunity.
The director and deputy director of the traffic management department have been suspended and several others, including members of the city’s road administration, removed from their posts, the city’s publicity department said yesterday.
An investigation has been launched into the claim that local authorities charged truck drivers a monthly fee to ignore overloading.
Liu Wenli, who drank pesticide, survived thanks to timely treatment. She left hospital on November 29, China Youth Daily reported.
“If I hadn’t been pushed to the wall, I wouldn’t have tried to commit suicide,” Liu said.
She said she had been fined up to 200,000 yuan (US$32,820) in a period of just six months.
Liu said her employee, Guo Wanli, was driving and she was the passenger when her truck was stopped at around 5:30pm on November 14.
Law enforcement officials asked for money. “Since we had paid the monthly fee, we refused. But they called people from road administration to come,” Guo said.
Guo told The Beijing News they paid 3,000 yuan a month to escape fines.
Liu said she begged officials for hours to let them go on “but they said they wouldn’t let me go if I didn’t pay.”
In a rage, Liu called a taxi and went to buy a bottle of pesticide. On her return, she threatened to drink it if they forced her to pay. But she was told: “Your death is none of our business. Even if you die, we won’t let you go,” said Guo.
Liu drank the pesticide and witnesses said Guo called an ambulance while the officials left, the newspaper reported.
