Officials rule burned woman's death a workplace accident

AUTHORITIES of Beijing's Xicheng District said the death of a woman who fell into a hot water valve manhole on the sidewalk was a workplace accident.

They said the hot water pipe leaked and eroded the soil under the pavement, causing the manhole lid to collapse under the feet of Yang Erjing, 27, on April 1. Yang suffered severe burns over 99 percent of her body.

Beijing Wanhua Real Estate Company, which owns the building that uses the hot water, has paid 320,000 yuan (US$50,752) for Yang's medical treatment.

Police are still investigating the company, the building's management team, and the hot water supplier to determine who are responsible for the fatal accident, the district officials said.

Yang was rushed to the Beijing Jishuitan Hospital and was treated in the intensive care unit until she died last night. "Over 90 percent of her body was scalded and she suffered multiple organ failure," the hospital said in her dying notice.
