Officials sacked as 14 students die in mishap

SIX officials were fired yesterday after an overloaded three-wheel vehicle carrying 20 primary school students plunged into a river, killing 14 and injuring six in Hunan Province.

Authorities in Hengnan County fired Wang Li, chief of the local education bureau; Yang Shixin, traffic safety supervisor in Songjiang Township; Chen Xin, headmaster of Yinguo Primary School, and three other officials, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

They are being held responsible for the fatal accident that happened at 7:40am on Monday, the report said.

Families of the 14 dead students have signed compensation deals with the local government, but officials didn't reveal details, the report said.

The six injured are still being treated in hospital, Hengnan officials said.

The three-wheeler plunged into the river while crossing a bridge in Yinguo Village on the misty morning, Beijing News reported. The students were trapped in the vehicle until two passers-by saw them and raced to rescue.

Xinhua said the vehicle was jointly rented by the parents, but authorities haven't confirmed this yet. The driver, surnamed Chen, has been held for questioning, according to Hengnan police.

Li Yunzhi, an official with Songjiang Township, said the vehicle only had capacity for eight people.

Hengnan County official Tang Daibin said they had received a report of parents renting an illegal vehicle to take their children to school nearly one month ago.

The education bureau had transferred the case to the transportation bureau.
