Officials sacked for fancy cars, offices
Eight officials of the Communication University of China have been punished for violating austerity code, marking a new round of anti-graft probes in the education sector.
The Ministry of Education named and shamed top officials for their fancy cars and offices and for trying to cover up the university’s “chaotic” financial management.
Chen Wenshen, secretary of the Communist Party of China committee in the Beijing university, used office cars exceeding the standards his rank allowed, while Principal Su Zhiwu was found having an office “severely beyond” the official standards and using university funds to hold banquets in public venues, according to a statement by the ministry released on Monday.
Chen was “criticized,” the statement said, while Su and Vice Principal Lu Zhisheng were sacked as they failed their duties to effectively administrate the university and enforce the frugality rules, which led to “chaos in financial management” and expenditures in official vehicles, trips and receptions far exceeding budgets.
The other five, ranging from office director to logistics head, were sacked, demoted or warned for fabricating facts and data during anti-corruption inspections and investigations.
