Officials sacked over deaths of 18 kindergarten kids
TWO deputy county mayors in northwest Gansu Province lost their jobs after a traffic collision killed 20 people, including 18 kindergarten children, yesterday.
The local education bureau director and traffic police chief were also sacked for dereliction of duty, which is blamed for the long-existing problem of overloaded school buses, Qingyang City government said today.
The minibus had only nine seats but was jammed with 62 children and two adults. It rammed head-on with a truck yesterday morning, killing the driver, the teacher and 18 kids, and injuring 44 other children, 12 of them seriously.
The minibus belonged to a private kindergarten and it received a safety check just three days before the accident, Lu Huadong, director of the Qingyang City Education Bureau, told China News Service.
The kindergarten was asked to stop the illegal and dangerous practice right away, but it apparently ignored the order, China News Service reported today.
Initial investigations found the bus was driving on the wrong side of the road at a high speed and in heavy fog when the tragedy happened.
