Officials sacked over false arsenic scare

THIRTEEN officials in Hainan Province have been sacked or warned over their roles in a drinks arsenic scandal that raised questions over the credibility of China's food authorities.

Those sacked include Wang Jianlu, deputy director of Haikou's Bureau of Industry and Commerce Administration, and Han Xingguang, the bureau's head of marketing, reported Xinhua news agency today.

The affair began last November 24, when Haikou's industry and commerce bureau warned of excessive arsenic in three vegetable and fruit juices made by Nongfu Spring and Taiwan-based Uni President.

But it recalled its warning on December 1 after new tests conducted by the Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine confirmed the drinks were safe.

Wang admitted signing an order to take "tainted products" off the shelves but denied issuing the warning, which attracted nationwide concern.

Another 11 officers of the bureau were also warned or relocated to other positions over the case.

Also sacked were two officers for negligence in a nationwide "toxic cowpeas" scandal.

Two directors of Yazhou bureau and Fenghuang bureau of Industry and Commerce Administration were sacked after batches of cowpeas from the Sanya area of Hainan tested positive for a highly toxic pesticide.
