Official's son in court for bribery

THE son of a former high-ranking official in Henan Province went on trial yesterday for taking bribes worth 2 million yuan (US$292,838.45).

He is also charged with having another 6 million yuan in property which he could not explain acquiring, the Dahe Daily reported.

Sun Yi, son of Sun Shanwu, the former Party secretary of Luoyang City, received and asked for bribes worth 2.11 million yuan, on his own or with his father, on 10 occasions, prosecutors told the court.

Sun Yi, 34, admitted all the charges in court and asked for leniency. The court did not announce its sentence yesterday.

Sun Yi was detained by Changsha Police in October 2007 for bribery. He was an official with Henan Local Tax Bureau.

Sun Yi's mother, sister and brother-in-law were also charged with taking bribes after his father was found to be involved in corruption, the Dahe Daily report said.

The court was told Sun Yi received 100,000 yuan from Zhao Hongxian in early 2004 to ask his father help promote him to captain of Luoyang Police's traffic squad. In July that year, Zhao was appointed captain.

Later, Zhao gave Sun Yi another 400,000 yuan to ask his father help promote him to be vice director of the Luoyang Police. In May 2006, he was promoted.

In April 2006, Sun Yi asked for 300,000 yuan from Chen Zhigong, an executive with a local real estate company, for "an emergency," after having his father help Chen acquire land for development on three occasions in October 2005, and in January and April 2006.

He took money from other people while he offered his father's assistance, the court was told.

Sun Yi has more than 600 million yuan in property which he cannot explain acquiring, prosecutors said. As a tax official, his annual income has been 35,000 yuan since 1998.

But he has three apartments, intended to buy another five, and owned a commercial property and two cars, prosecutors said.

He invested 1.7 million yuan in six funds in 2006 and 2007 and collected 2.4 million yuan in profits.
