Officials suspended after tax evasion suspect dies
FOUR county officials in Loudi City in central Hunan Province have been suspended for careless work during the investigation of a tax evasion suspect who jumped from a building to flee but died.
Yang Peng, 27, villager in Xinhua, a county rich in coal, was caught scalping coal tax bills last week, authorities said. They said he admitted to having trafficked in tax bills in an interrogation conducted by the county police and officials with the county coal tax collection office.
He later followed eight investigators to a restaurant at the Zijiang River to have dinner. When only two officials were left watching him and the others went outdoors to discuss how to punish Yang, he jumped 10 meters from the room to the river, People's Daily reported yesterday. A search was begun but his body was missing until two days later, on September 8, when he was found in the river.
Preliminary investigation showed the investigators didn't abuse Yang to confess, but authorities said the four should be blamed for their negligence. Liu Guangrong and Zhang Lijun, officials with the coal tax collection office, and police officers Luo Guangwang and Huang Shouzhong have been suspended as the investigation continues.
