Officials suspended over Fujian fire

THREE education bureau officials have been suspended in southeast China’s Fujian Province after a fire in a kindergarten injured over 90 children. Authorities have also detained the kindergarten president for failing to follow up on a notice that had warned of a lack of firefighting facilities.

A fire broke out on the first floor of Juchi Plaza in Jiaocheng District of Ningde on Wednesday afternoon. It spread to Donghu Kindergarten on the second floor, injuring 92 children and 12 adults. They were rescued by firefighters and residents and rushed to hospital. There were however no casualties.

Jiaocheng District government said the fire brigade authorities had served a notice to the kindergarten after an inspection in July. The education bureau had also asked the kindergarten to carry out renovations before the new semester in September.

But, pushed by parents, they issued a temporary license to the kindergarten before they could carry out renovations.

Jiaocheng District education bureau chief Zhou Tinghui, deputy director Lin Yuesheng and another official Lan Changchun were suspended yesterday. Donghu Kindergarten President Yang Qiuling was also detained.

The two owners of a flower shop, where the fire started, have also been detained.
