Officials suspended over flood

A TOP official at a work-safety bureau and a town chief in Weiyuan County, in southwest China's Sichuan Province, were suspended yesterday after a flood at a local coal mine trapped 29 miners for more than one day, before they were brought to safety.

County authorities said Yu Liangcai, the head of the county's work-safety bureau and Hu Yuehui, chief of Xiaohe Township, were suspended for negligence in relation to the accident at Batian Coal Mine last Sunday.

A special team was set up to investigate the cause of the flood and whether the mining operation had violated safety rules, reported the China News °?Service yesterday.

Although a report by Xinhua news agency said the mine is legal and fully licensed, preliminary investigations exposed some weakness in the mine's safety measures.

A total of 35 workers were not equipped with GPS devices or communication equipment, which hindered attempts by rescuers to locate the trapped miners.
