Officials 'tampered with candidate's medical test'

AN outstanding candidate in a civil service exam was denied a position by government officials and doctors who fabricated a medical report, a court in Changzhi City in northern China's Shanxi Province heard yesterday.

Three former government officials and two doctors are accused of bribery, taking bribes and abuse of power, local media reported.

It is claimed they prevented top-scoring examinee 27-year-old Song Jiangming obtaining a public servant position in Changzhi City last year by producing a false report claiming that he had anemia.

Candidates can be rejected if a medical condition affects their ability to do a job.

Jia Zhihong, a former top official with Yincheng Village under the city, is accused of bribing the two former government officials to secure a local civil service place for his daughter, who sat the same exam.

Former human resources officials Zhao Bo and Ji Xinrui allegedly took bribes of 100,000 yuan (US$15,816) and 17,000 yuan from Jia.

Doctors Han Yumei and Yang Weifang are accused of helping the officials tamper with the results of Song's physical examination.

He was rejected for a civil service job on medical grounds. Song underwent the same test at three other hospitals, and all showed he was healthy.

The trial continues.

Three other officials are under arrest and awaiting trials, prosecutors said.
