Officials warned over pools of pollution

SEVERAL officials in Dacheng County in north China’s Hebei Province have been given warnings after media reports exposed the state of two sewage pits, local discipline inspection authorities said.

Liu Guowang, director of the Party’s county committee, received an intra-Party warning.

Liu was in charge of the county’s environmental protection work from September 2013 to February 2017. The county government failed to supervise or help Nanzhaofu Township deal with the sewage pits, the authorities said.

Liu Zenghuai, former secretary of the Party’s township committee, was held responsible for not highlighting the problem of the sewage pits and failing to deal with the pollution.

Liu Zenghuai and township head Ma Donghao also received intra-Party warnings.

Deputy head of Dacheng County Xiao Jianjun, and Fan Junliang, director of the county’s environmental protection bureau, along with three other local officials, received a public notice of criticism since they had only been in their posts for a short time.

Pictures of the pools went viral last Tuesday after a report from an environmental organization.

Two pools — 170,000 and 30,000 square meters — formed by years of digging and illegal dumping of waste acid in 2013, had contaminated water and soil in the area.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection has sent investigation teams to examine the pits and ordered local authorities to intensify monitoring of water and soil in the area.
