Oil leaks are under control, say inspectors
NO new leaks have been detected in the seabed at ConocoPhillips's oil platforms in north China's Bohai Bay, and oil sheen on the sea's surface is diminishing, the State Oceanic Administration said yesterday.
After a spot-check at the Penglai 19-3 oilfield, administration inspectors said progress has been made in sealing the leaks and cleaning oil sheen from the surface.
The inspectors said the leaks are now under control, although one or two liters of oil continue to leak into the sea on a daily basis and oil spots are still visible on the surface.
The inspectors stressed ConocoPhilips should continue cleaning operations and work to complete the sealing of leaks before the onset of winter.
More than 5,500 square kilometers of the Bohai Sea have been polluted by the leaks since June, the country's worst offshore pollution.
