Oil official denies charges in graft trial

A FORMER senior executive of China鈥檚 largest oil producer denied most of the corruption charges leveled against him in court on Monday.

Tao Yuchun, ex-president of a gas subsidiary of state-owned China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), is accused of abuse of power, embezzlement, taking bribes, and seeking illegal gains for relatives and friends totaling about 300 million yuan (US$48.3 million), Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

He admitted the final charge but rejected the others, it said.

The Zhuhai Intermediate People鈥檚 Court in Guangdong Province charged Tao with taking bribes and embezzling public assets totalling 52 million yuan (US$8.4 million) as well as causing losses of 261 million yuan in state assets.

Between 2002 and 2011, Tao served as general manager of four state-owned companies, three based in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province and one in Qingdao, Shandong Province.

Taking advantage of these posts, he took bribes in money or property and sought illegal benefits for the companies of his relatives and friends, said prosecutors. Tao鈥檚 abuse of power also caused heavy losses of state assets.

The court will announce a verdict on a separate date.

Jiang Jiemin, China鈥檚 former state assets chief and an ex-chairman of CNPC, confessed to corruption at his trial also on Monday.

President Xi Jinping has vowed to oust corrupt officials all the way from low-level 鈥渇lies鈥 to high-ranking 鈥渢igers鈥 amid fears graft could threaten the party鈥檚 hold on power.
