Old circuit identified as cause of fatal bus blaze
ONE person was killed and 31 injured when a bus went up in flames yesterday in Urumqi, capital of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
An aging circuit has been identified as the cause of the fire, according to local authorities.
The bus caught fire suddenly at 11:35am on Guangming Road in Urumqi, reported Xinhua news agency.
A female passenger died in the blaze. Her identity had not been confirmed last night.
Six passengers were taken to local hospitals, while another 25 with slight injuries sought medical treatment independently.
The 528A bus route is managed by Xinjiang Haotian Transport Co Ltd, a private local company.
Black smoke quickly filled the bus after the fire broke out, the driver told reporters as he awaited an ambulance, shirtless and with burns to his arms and shoulders.
“The bus was moving along when I suddenly heard a sound and a fire quickly broke out inside,” a man in his 50s told Xinhua, his hair singed by flames.
Witnesses said the fire started in the front of the bus. The doors were not functioning, so passengers had to escape through windows, reported local news portal www.ts.cn.
The fire was extinguished at 11:46am. The burned out frame of the vehicle caused some traffic delays.
