Old dough: Papa John’s shuts store in Nanjing
PAPA John’s, the US-based pizza chain store, has closed an outlet in Nanjing after it was reported to have been using expired dough.
The company is awaiting an inspection by the local food and drug administration, the Jinling Evening News reported yesterday.
The company said the Nanjing incident was a one-off but it would be working close with the local food safety watchdog while stepping up quality assurance processes in all its other restaurants.
Following a tip-off, an initial investigation by the food and drug administration in the city’s Pukou District found 22 pizzas had been made with outdated dough between July 25 to July 28. Another 53 pizzas had been sealed for further inspection.
Last week, Papa John’s said it had stopped using products supplied by Shanghai Husi Food Co after a television report of Husi using outdated meat.
Fast food chains McDonald’s and Yum Brands Inc also stopped sourcing from the US-based OSI Group’s facilities in China.
Shanghai’s Food and Drug Administration said that, after examining Husi’s records, it found that more than 5,000 boxes of expired meat had been stored or sold to fast-food chains including McDonald’s and KFC.
A Shanghai Television report on July 20 alleged that Husi had been mixing expired meat with fresh cuts and lying to inspectors from McDonald’s by keeping fake production logs.
Five Husi employees were detained last week.
