On Taiwan trip, Han donates to ear hospital

SHANGHAI Mayor Han Zheng, on behalf of Shanghai Red Cross, donated 1.5 million yuan (US$219,800) to help children with hearing disorders in Taiwan yesterday, while continuing his four-day visit to the island.

Han gave the donation as honorary president of Shanghai Red Cross when visiting Taipei's Cheng Hsin Hospital.

"I am most willing to play a bridging role to enhance communications in the health and sanitation development courses in both Shanghai and Taiwan," the mayor said on the visit.

Han enjoyed a performance by some children who have regained their hearing ability at the hospital.

So far this year, 17 children with hearing problems from the mainland have been successfully cured by the hospital.

The hospital manager told the mayor they are planning to establish program centers on the mainland to train mainland teachers who could also help with the children's rehabilitation progress.

The hospital currently provides the best level of therapies to cure minors' hearing problems.

The mayor went on to visit a waste-water processing project in Taipei County. The Shanghai government delegation hopes to learn advanced practices in managing more environmentally friendly infrastructure systems.

Han later traveled by high-speed rail to Taichung City. He also met Chairman of the People First Party Soong Chu-yu.
