On display, cutting edge of electronic hardware
THE People’s Liberation Army displayed some of the latest military hardware for electronic warfare in yesterday’s parade marking its 90th anniversary.
Among hundreds of armaments on show at the Zhurihe military training base were 16 items that can disrupt enemy radar and communication in air defense and field battles, according to Wu Yafei, head of the electronic confrontation formation at the parade.
“Electronic warfare has now become a key means of combat in modern warfare,” said Wu.
“The enlisting of the new electronic warfare equipment in the PLA has significantly enhanced its capability in this field,” Wu said.
The parade also showcased two models of electronic reconnaissance vehicles, a Y-8 electronic jamming aircraft and a group of military drones that can “paralyze and suppress” enemy early-warning and command communication systems.
Nearly half of the weapons displayed at the parade were new or modified versions that had rarely been shown in public before.
Among them were the HQ-9B surface-to-air missile capable of intercepting enemy tactic ballistic missiles, and the HQ-22 SAM missile designed to intercept fixed-wing aircraft and cruise missiles.
Others included the YJ-83K air-to-ship missile, which can operate in all weathers and at all altitudes, and deliver precision strikes on multiple targets beyond visual range. The YJ-83K is designed to mainly strike medium to large-surface vessels and flotillas.
However, the highlight of the parade was the host of conventional and nuclear missiles from the PLA’s newly established Rocket Force, which rumbled past a camouflaged stand where Chinese leader Xi Jinping watched.
They included the Dongfeng-26 ballistic missile, which can be fired at short notice and fitted with a nuclear warhead, the Dongfeng-21D land-based anti-ship ballistic missile described by some as the “carrier killer,” and the Dongfeng-16G conventional missile designed for precision strikes against key enemy targets.
Members of the “Falcon Commando Unit,” an elite police counter-terror brigade under the Special Police Academy of the Chinese People’s Armed Police Force, rode on the latest anti-terror assault vehicles.
China’s latest J-20 stealth fighters also made their parade debut.
