One of China’s richest villages to have exhibit at Milan World Expo

Yonglian Village in Jiangsu Province, one of the richest villages in China, today announced it would be a part of World Expo 2015 Milan in Italy to showcase how a poor rural area became rich and prosperous in a short time.

The village will set up an exhibition in the China Pavilion at the Expo Milan to share its development experiences with villages around the world, Wu Dongcai, Yonglian’s Party chief told a press conference in Shanghai this morning.

Its display will focus on how it developed various industries, including iron and steel, in the 1980s that lead to its rapid development.

The village had only 200 farmers in 1970, but now has a population of more than 10,000 after it integrated five surrounding villages. It had a total income of 35.8 billion yuan (US$5.77 billion) and contributed some 1.8 billion yuan in taxes to the country.

The village will also supply its specially developed rice to visitors and staff at the China Pavilion. The rice is famous for its bright color, special scent and good taste, Wu said.
