Online users inspired by disabled duo
TWO disabled Chinese people who have voluntarily planted trees in northern China over the past 13 years have been voted by Chinese online users as among their top 10 inspiring heroes.
Jia Wenqi and Jia Haixia, both aged over 50 and who have arm and sight disabilities, have planted about 3.3 hectares of trees in Jingxing County in north China’s Hebei Province.
The quarterly vote has been organized by Xinhua news agency since 2011 to inspire moral strength in the public by highlighting good deeds. The event is the first of its kind in China to select heroes among ordinary people by mobilizing social media.
The other heroes include Lu Chuang, who has helped nearly 200 juveniles to combat their Internet addiction over the past 13 years; Wei Deyou and his wife, who spent the past 52 years safeguarding the border with Kazakhstan in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region; and Li Jinlong, who saved 17 people in a flood in Bijie City in southwest China’s Guizhou Province.
