Operation halted until doctors get more money

HEALTH authorities in south China are investigating reports that a young woman was left bleeding on an operating table for three hours while doctors demanded more cash to complete the surgery.

Wu Zhaoqun, an 18-year-old migrant worker living in Qingxi Town in Guangdong Province, was to undergo surgery to remove cervical polyps and then have an abortion, Guangzhou Daily reported yesterday.

According to Wu, doctors at the private Yinshan Outpatient Clinic in Qingxi said the procedures would cost a total of 460 yuan (US$75).

But five minutes into surgery on Monday, surgeons downed instruments and said they needed 7,700 yuan to complete the procedure.

Over the next three hours, Wu’s 21-year-old boyfriend, Zhang Lei, was called into the operating theater five times, told that his girlfriend was in a serious condition and urged to come up with 7,700 yuan.

Zhang said medics told him Wu was in extreme pain and “bleeding like a fountain.”

After friends helped out, he agreed to pay 4,400 yuan, and after handing over 2,300 yuan doctors completed the surgery within five minutes.

An official with Yinshan Outpatient Clinic said it was reasonable for doctors to charge more money if a patient’s condition changed.

He blamed the incident on poor communications on both sides.

Qingxi Town Public Health Supervision Team, administered by Dongguan City Health Bureau, is carrying out an investigation.

If the claims are found to be true, the clinic will lose its licence, said the bureau.
