Operator of detained ship in Jeju Island trips boycott
The operator of Chinese cruise liner Henna is to cancel trips to South Korea’s Jeju Island in protest at the detainment of the ship by a Jeju court last Friday.
HNA Tourism said yesterday the boycott will last until Jeju authorities make an official apology to all passengers and promise that such an incident will not happen again.
The Beijing-based operator also reserves the right to file a lawsuit against the detainment, said Zhang Ling, its chairman, at a ceremony to welcome passengers and crew back to China when the ship docked in Tianjin yesterday.
The luxury liner set off from China’s northern port of Tianjin last Friday to sail around the Korean Peninsula on a six-day voyage. It was detained before it left Jeju after a court had received a seizure application from a subsidiary company of Jiangsu Shagang Group Co Ltd.
On Sunday and Monday, 1,558 passengers were flown home on chartered flights. Passengers will receive 2,000 yuan (US$327) compensation and a free ticket on any Henna voyage, Zhang said.
The dispute is reported to have been over a payment owed by Grand China Shipping Co Ltd, a company in which an HNA Group subsidiary had shares before it went bankrupt.
