Organ transplant trial

A TRIAL organ donation system will be set up between 10 provinces and cities.

The system will raise the utilization rate of donated organs, Guangzhou Daily reported today.

Heart, lung and pancreas are the most wasted organs, said Chen Zhouhua, vice director of Organ Transplantation Society of Chinese Medical Association at a symposium recently.

"Only 20 out of 130 donated hearts are successfully used," Chen was quoted as saying.
The lack of information on the nationwide demand for organs is the main reason for the waste, Chen said.

"For example, it is hard to match organs for a patient with AB blood type. Without the list of required organs nationwide, the organs will very probably be wasted." Yet 1.5 million patients need organ transplants every year in China, the report said. Only 11,000 of them are lucky enough to get the surgery.

The organ donation system will include Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Liaoning and Wuhan provinces.
