Orphaned children are special concern
THE Chinese government is "trying its best" to look for families for orphans in the Yushu quake zone while attempting to give them special care, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
"Among all people in the quake-hit areas, children whose parents were killed during the quake are in the most difficult situation and need special care," said the ministry yesterday.
Government organizations and social groups are planning to work together to care for the orphans.
The ministry said it will seek adoptions for orphans in Yushu as soon as possible, and "fully respect" the children's preferences and the traditions and habits of ethnic children.
The total number of orphans in Yushu is not available.
National and local authorities will jointly provide each orphan with a monthly 1,000 yuan (US$146) for April, May and June.
