Orphans prove timely
MORE than 30 children from an orphanage in Yushu prefecture survived the earthquake yesterday because they were all late for school.
"This had rarely happened before," China News Service quoted the orphanage headmistress as saying.
Li Xinglu, who built the orphanage in 2003, said the children always arrived at school at 7:30am but were still on the road when the earthquake hit at 7:49am.
"They live in the orphanage and the school is nearby."
The orphanage was designed to withstand earthquakes and remained standing, Li said, but the school collapsed.
At least 67 people were killed in Jiegu Town, where the prefecture government is headquartered.
More than 85 percent of buildings in Jiegu have collapsed, local officials said.
