Outcry over plans to harmonize roof colors
NANJING'S housing authority yesterday denied online rumors that painting the roofs of residential buildings in the city will cost 100 million yuan (US$15.5 million).
It said the painting was part of a decade-long project to renovate the old buildings in the capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, according to China News Service.
The project, launched in 2001, involves replace flat with pitched roofs, repairing roof leaks and installing insulation. More than 6,750 residential buildings have been refurbished since 2001 and 800 more will be renovated this year, according to the Nanjing Commission of Housing and Urban-rural Development.
Zhu Xianrong, a commission official, said the views of residents are being sought and the cost will be borne by district and municipal governments. He denied the cost was as high as 100 million yuan, estimating it would be 30 million yuan to 50 million yuan.
Buildings near Zifeng Tower, the tallest building in the city, will be renovated this year, Zhu told Yangtze Evening News. The newspaper reported that all roofs will be painted the same color to create a unified view. The color has yet to be chosen.
Earlier rumors on the Internet speculated that the municipal government would be splashing out 100 million yuan on painting the roofs, provoking criticism that it amounts to a pointless vanity project.
One netizen, identified as Jialinchangjiang, said the government should spend more on upgrading the drainage system rather than harmonizing the color of roofs.
