Outrage as staff at hospital pose for photographs
A PRIVATE hospital’s deputy director was sacked and the director fined yesterday after pictures of doctors and nurses posing in an operating theater as a patient was undergoing surgery were posted online.
The deputy director, surnamed Chen, was responsible for supervising doctors at the hospital in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province.
In addition to being removed from his post at the Xi’an Fengcheng Hospital, Chen was also fined three months’ salary.
The director, surnamed Yan, was also fined three months’ salary, the Xi’an Bureau of Public Health announced last night.
The photos were taken on August 15 before the opening of a new operating theater, and the doctors and nurses are said to have taken the photographs to mark the closing of their old theater, the bureau said after an investigation.
Everyone who appeared in the photographs was asked to express their regret and were fined three months’ salary. In addition, the head of the anesthesiology department, surnamed Zhang, and the head nurse, surnamed Tian, were fined the equivalent of three months’ bonuses.
The hospital was asked to apologize to the public and launch a staff review to ensure the safety of patients, the bureau added.
In one picture posted online, three doctors are stitching a patient’s wound while five other medical staff link arms for the camera.
The woman who posted the photographs online said they were taken by the hospital’s director.
She said she copied them from the private Wechat account of someone she said was a “classmate” who now works at a major hospital in Xi’an in Shaanxi Province.
She said she posted the pictures to make sure other doctors didn’t behave in such a fashion.
However, after a deluge of online complaints, she deleted the photos and said she wished the public would stop criticizing the doctors.
