Outrage over lavish trip

AN online post revealing that the auditing bureau in Haimen City, Zhejiang Province, hosted a luxury two-day tour for counterparts from Sichuan Province has caused outrage among netizens, who accused them of indulging in lavish spending at the public's expense.

A netizen called "hacksuper18" first published Haimen Auditing Bureau's schedule to host 15 counterparts from Sichuan's Mianzhu Auditing Bureau on the online forum Tianya.cn on Tuesday. The 15-member group was accompanied by 24 Haimen officials, whose names and titles were listed in the itinerary, Chinese media reported yesterday.

Netizens blasted Haimen officials for organizing a luxury tour which included hotels and restaurants. Some netizens estimated that they spent nearly 100,000 yuan (US$15,170) entertaining the guests.

The schedule listed in detail the activities the group took part in. Judging from the schedule, only four hours were spent on business.

To defuse anger, Shi Ping, director of the Haimen Auditing Bureau, said the purpose of the visit was not sightseeing or shopping - it was a return visit after the Haimen bureau visited their counterparts' after an earthquake hit Mianzhu in 2008. Shi said the cost of the visit did not exceed 23,000 yuan.
