50 baby cobras vanish from unlicensed snake breeding farm in Nanjing

MORE than 50 cobra snakes are at large since fleeing a private unlicensed breeding farm in Nanjing in late August, the local government has said.

More than 200 baby cobra snakes are believed to have escaped a snake breeding farm between August 26 and 29 this year. The farm workers had later captured, or killed about 150 snakes, but more than 50 are still unaccounted for.

A villager discovered a cobra at his home and killed it at noon of October 8. More villagers were later aware of the scare and alarmed the police.

Investigators found the farm had introduced 1,820 eggs of monocled cobra from Guangdong Province in August. About 1,500 were hatched.

The snake farm for venom production did not have a license. The local government said a blanket search covering an area of 5 kilometers around the farm was launched.

Local medical staff were kept on standby, while a batch of antivenom was dispatched from Shanghai for snake bite injuries.
