Over half of hepatitis B patients unaware of treatment
A RECENT survey found over 53 percent of Chinese patients with hepatitis B don't know long-term and regular antiviral treatment can prevent the disease from developing into liver cancer, experts told a hepatitis forum ahead of World Hepatitis Day on July 28.
The forum, launched by Wu Jieping Medical Foundation and Bristol-Myers Squibb yesterday, said China has the largest number of hepatitis B virus carriers in the world. There are nearly 93 million people are infected with the virus and about 20 million of them have developed chronic hepatitis B. Around 280,000 Chinese die of hepatic cirrhosis and liver cancer and other liver diseases every year, accounting for half of world's number of people who die of liver diseases.
The survey conducted by Wu Jieping Foundation is the first such study in China. To study chronic hepatitis B patients' awareness of proper treatment and help the government to work out a more effective hepatitis B prevention and control program, the foundation interviewed nearly 2,000 patients.
Education about hepatitis B and pushing long-term and regular treatments among hepatitis B patients in China is extremely important in reducing the spreading of hepatitis B and improving treatment results in China, said Dr Duan Zhongping, vice president of Beijing YouAn Hospital.
