Overhaul needed for highway shortly after it opened

A highway built at a cost of 8.75 billion yuan (US$1.37 billion) in northwest Gansu Province underwent an overhauled just two months after it opened to traffic.

The local government claimed that lax control during the construction was to blame for the damage of the Tianding Highway, the People's Daily reported today.

A Gansu Province Transportation Bureau report showed that about 31 kilometers of the highway had been damaged.

A bureau director, Tan Yingpeng, said the highway suffered "surface damage" and they discovered the problem in June.

Heavy rains in June and July aggravated the problem, he added.

The bureau's official website showed the 235-kilometer Tianding highway is a major section of the GZ 45 highway. Its construction began in October 2007 and it went into service in May this year.

"It is not a real highway," said a driver, who had to go slowly because the road was pitted with holes.

After the damages were found, the highway underwent a total repair and is now ready to reopen. Authorities have ordered an examination of all the materials used in the highway construction.
