Overhaul of villas in scenic site called off

THE illegal renovation of villas in the vicinity of Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing was called off by the city government and the developer was ordered to restore the villas to their original design, Oriental Morning Post reported today.

After the villa renovation was exposed on CCTV, Nanjing Urban Planning and Land Resource Bureau started an investigation immediately and reported the result on December 31.

The report said the renovation of 12 villas by Jiangsu Deji Company in the scenic area of Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum was unauthorized. The project had lasted for one year and was now terminated.

It also confirmed that the villas were not in a "military zone" as the developer claimed in an attempt to block investigators.

Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925) was the leader of the 1911 Revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty and founded the Republic of China. He was buried in the picturesque Purple Mountain in the eastern suburb of Nanjing, now a tourist attraction.
