Overloading blamed for Harbin bridge collapse that killed three people
Overloading rather than shoddy construction is the cause of a bridge collapse in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang Province that left three people dead, the city government said today.
Four overloaded heavy trucks were driving simultaneously on the right side of the Yangmingtan Bridge, causing a reinforced concrete girder to snap under the weight, it said in an official statement.
A 120-meter-long ramp then tilted and crashed to the ground, sending the four trucks plunging 30 meters, killing three people and injuring five others.
Three of the four vehicles were heavy-duty trucks loaded with lime. Together they weighed more than 400 tons, the officials said.
The eight-lane Yangmingtan Bridge which opened to traffic last November is the longest bridge in northeast China with a length of 15.42 kilometers.
Local media said it cost 1.88 billion yuan (US$298 million) to build. Construction took just 18 months, a record for the province.
