POLICE authorities in northwest China's Shaanxi Province confirmed today that they had detained the owner of a coal mine where 28 miners were killed in an accident yesterday.

All of the 28 miners who were working in the shaft were killed when an underground cable caught fire at about 8:10 pm at Xiaonangou coal mine at Sangshuping Township of Hancheng City, said the general office of the Shaanxi provincial government in a statement Sunday.

Rescuers retrieved remains of five miners as of 6:30 am today, said the statement, adding the location of the other 23 bodies had also been fixed.

No further information about the coal mine is available.
