Owner held after dog kills toddler
POLICE have detained a man after his dog killed a toddler in the northeastern city of Dalian.
The Tibetan mastiff bit the neck of the three-year-old girl at around 7pm on Thursday near a grocery store in the city's high-tech zone. The girl's mother and others used bricks and sticks to scare the dog away and the girl was rushed to hospital. But she died from her injuries.
The dog's owner had illegally raised the Tibetan mastiff since April 2012, police said. He has been detained for negligent homicide, and police have taken the mastiff to a dog pound.
On the same day, a male mastiff freed itself from its chains and attacked two passersby, a man and a woman, in Beijing. The woman sustained injuries to her back and leg, and the man to his arm and shoulder, police said.
On June 15, police in the eastern city of Ningbo shot dead a Tibetan mastiff as it attacked a 52-year-old man. His injuries were not life threatening.
According to China Central Television, video surveillance footage from June 3 showed a Tibetan mastiff tackle a little girl playing at the side of the road in Yuncheng, in north Shanxi Province. The dog sank its teeth into her thigh and did not let go until a passerby hit it with a motorcycle and sticks. The girl's injuries were not life threatening.
The cases sparked online calls for tougher restrictions, including bans, on violent dogs.
