Owner in prison over wastewater
The owner of a molding workshop in east China’s Zhejiang Province was jailed for a year yesterday and fined 2,000 yuan (US$320) for pouring toxic wastewater down a toilet.
Xia’s actions posed a risk to the environment, the People’s Court in Wenzhou’s Ouhai District said.
The workshop had no sewage treatment facilities. Instead, it flushed wastewater, which contained heavy metals, down the toilet.
A routine check by local environmental protection authorities in August found the wastewater contained chromium, copper, zinc and nickel, all exceeding national standards.
