PFP chairman’s bid for Taiwan leadership

The chairman of Taiwan’s People First Party, James Soong Chu-yu, has announced his candidacy for next year’s leadership election.

Soong promised to “build a framework for the sustainable and peaceful development across the Taiwan Strait,” saying a peaceful and stable relationship between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland was in the common interests of both sides, the Asian-Pacific region and the world.

In the January 16 election, he will be up against Tsai Ing-wen, chairwoman of the Democratic Progress Party, Hung Hsiu-chu of the ruling Kuomintang, Shih Ming-teh, former DPP chairman, and Hsu Jung-shu, former DPP member and legislator.

Soong was born in south China’s Hunan Province in 1942 and went to Taiwan with his parents in 1949. In 1999, Soong gave up his KMT membership and ran an unsuccessful bid in 2000 as an independent. He later founded the PFP.

Soong joined the 2004 bid as the running mate of Lien Chan, the then KMT chairman, but lost to incumbent Chen Shui-bian. He also lost in 2012.
