P&G sanitary napkins in Beijing fail quality tests
PROCTER & Gamble’s sanitary napkins have failed quality tests for substandard infiltration capacity, the Beijing Consumer Association said.
Two samples tested by the watchdog found the real absorbing capacity of the towels were far below China’s national standard, the association said. But the American multinational company insisted yesterday the two napkins did not have quality problem and claimed it had conducted a number of tests before launching the products in the market.
The tested napkins were bought randomly from supermarkets and wholesale markets in Beijing. They passed the bacteria level and pH index.
P&G said the national standard for sanitary pads is not compulsory and companies are allowed to create and implement their own standards in the area based on regulations in China. It said its own standard has been registered by quality watchdog.
Samples of P&G’s Whisper fell short of the minimum level of the national standard by one third in terms of their permeating volume, the association said. Duoduo sanitary napkins were only 39 percent of the minimum level of the national standard.
The national standard states that the lowest level of infiltration volume of sanitary pads is 1.8 grams.
A total of 28 samples passed the association’s tests, while six had substandard infiltration capacity. One failed in measurement of sizes and another three had labeling problem.
The two P&G products are also available in Shanghai.
The Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission said it did not conduct similar checks, but the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau conducted sanitary napkins checks last year and in 2012. It said all 79 batches checked passed inspection.
