PLA sentry killed by gunmen
THOUSANDS of police officers were pressed into duty yesterday to track down the masked gunmen who shot and killed a sentry outside a People's Liberation Army garrison in Chongqing and stole his weapon.
The 18-year-old guard, who was identified as Han Junliang, was killed at 7:42pm on Thursday in Chongqing's High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, the Chongqing Evening News reported yesterday.
The attackers took Han's semi-automatic rifle before they fled, according to police in the southwest China city.
The exact number of gunmen was not known.
The municipality's public security bureau categorized its investigation as an anti-terrorist mission and launched a city-wide crackdown on illegal firearms and explosives.
A team of 148 experienced detectives including some retirees are now on the case, according to the newspaper.
More than 2,000 police officers from 252 task forces joined the crackdown with the assistance of thousands of other officers.
A joint police-army team was also focusing on the attack, according to the news report.
Local people said they noticed police carrying out checks on suspicious vehicles and passengers at major crossings in the city yesterday morning.
