PLA to set up pilot training bases in high schools
China鈥檚 air force is setting up bases in high schools to provide flight training for around 1,000 pupils aged 14 to 16.
It is in the process of selecting the schools and plans to begin training later this year, the ministries of education and public security and the People鈥檚 Liberation Army said yesterday.
Pupils selected from those who apply will take the training in addition to their regular studies. Successful applicants will sign contracts committing to apply for PLA aviation universities and take part in pilot recruitment tests after leaving school, said Peng Junxia, head of the force鈥檚 pilot recruitment bureau.
A 鈥渃omprehensive鈥 evaluation of pupils who apply for training will include psychological tests, and the choice of schools will be decided by both educational authorities and the air force, the PLA said.
Peng said that as weaponry was becoming more sophisticated, pilots needed to have a broader education, and the new scheme was designed with that in mind.
Peng said it was common in other countries for pilots to accumulate flight experience before joining the air force.
