Pair detained over tiger bone and bear paw haul

TWO suspects have been detained in connection with the seizure of 9 kilograms of tiger bones and 30 bear paws in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province.

Border police in Suifenhe City received a report of tiger bone smuggling in February, reported Xinhua news agency.

A special joint team was set up by the anti-smuggling bureau and police. On March 11 officers apprehended a man surnamed Hao in Dongning County in connection with selling big cat bones.

The same day, officers held another suspect, surnamed Wang, at Suifenhe City.

The team seized just under 11kg of suspected tiger bones and 30 bear paws.

Investigators discovered that Wang had bought the bones and bear paws for 160,000 yuan (US$25,782) from a foreign truck driver and sold them for 220,000 yuan to Hao.

Laboratory tests confirmed that 8.93kg of the bones came from tigers, a first-class national protected species.

Investigators did not say where the tigers had originated, nor what species the remaining 2kg of bones came from.

Eight of the bear paws came from Asiatic black bears and 22 from brown bears. Both are second-class national protected wild animals in China.

Tiger bones are used in traditional Chinese medicine in products such as tiger bone wine.

As the tiger is a powerful animal, there’s a belief that ingesting parts of the creature builds vitality.

Bear paws are traditionally used as ingredients in some recipes and remedies.
