Pair given 15-year terms for making, selling meth
TWO men who made methamphetamine using cold medicine in east China's Jiangsu Province were each sentenced to 15 years behind bars for manufacturing drugs.
Lishui County People's Court found the two men surnamed Chen and Wang made 95 kilograms of methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth, by extracting pseudoephedrine from cold medicine Contac NT in a rented apartment in June, the Yangtze Evening News reported yesterday.
Chen bought tools and more than 800 packs of the cold medicine while Wang was responsible for the manufacturing. They consumed a small part of the crystal meth they made and sold the rest to friends, splitting the profits, according to their confession to prosecutors.
They were busted by police in the apartment at the end of June, after the owner reported irritating odors to police, the report said.
Although the national Food and Drug Administration ordered that only five packs of cold medicine could be bought at one time, Chen still managed to get an online buyer to sell him 400 packs, according to the report.
"We have advised the FDA to pose stricter restrictions on OTCs which contain pseudoephedrine," the judge told the newspaper. "Real name registration is needed for large-sum purchase."
The 24-year-old Wang used to own a car-rental company, but he got addicted to drugs after his business failed and he incurred huge debts. He then turned to making drugs to earn money, the report said.
Wang learned how to make crystal meth from online forums where he met Chen, who was also interested in manufacturing drugs.
