Pair jailed for stealing fake money

TWO robbers have been jailed for up to four years in Jiangsu Province for stealing a suitcase full of "hell money" – fake paper bills burned to honor dead spirits

The two robbers surnamed Hu and Jia, both aged 20 from Hunan Province, were sentenced to three and a half years and four years in jail respectively, Southern Metropolis Daily reported today.

They met a man who was betting big amounts and bragging how much money he had in a suitcase at a chess and card room in Jiangyin County, according to the report.

But when they took his bag while he was in the men's room, they found they had stolen 14 stacks of "hell money" notes and just 1,400 yuan (US$205) of real cash, police said.

The victim, surnamed Lu, called police immediately after the theft to report a loss of 280,000 yuan, but later admitted he was just pretending to be rich by carrying the case full of fake bills.
