Pair of prominent Sichuan entrepreneurs on trial as gang kingpins

A PAIR of brothers from Sichuan Province, once well-regarded entrepreneurs and philanthropists, were among 36 suspects that were prosecuted today in neighboring Hubei Province on charges involving mafia-like crimes that led to nine deaths.

Liu Han, former executive of Hanlong Group, the biggest privately run company in southwest China’s Sichuan, and younger brother Liu Wei, who was the boss of Yiyuan Industrial Co Ltd based in Guanghan city in Sichuan, are alleged by prosecutors to be gang kingpins.

The case involves what officials say is the largest mafia-style criminal group to be prosecuted in recent years in China, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Liu brothers were accused of 15 crimes such as leading mafia-type gangs, intentionally killing others, operating casinos, illegally holding firearms and interfering with government affairs, the Intermediate People’s Court in Xiaoning city in Hubei heard. The maximum penalty is death.

Prosecutors said they started their illegal activities in 1993 by dominating provincial business and reaping huge profits. They also disturbed local social order and corrupted government officials by bribing them to seek immunity, prosecutors said.

A cross-provincial crackdown was launched in April when the Ministry of Public Security enlisted Hubei investigators to probe the defendants’ activities. The investigation led police to travel 100,000 kilometers to 10 provinces and cities, and involved the seizure of three military grenades, 20 guns and 677 bullets, Xinhua reported.
