Palace Museum denies cover-up of embezzlement scam

The Palace Museum in Beijing rejected allegations that it paid 100,000 yuan (US$15,588) to cover up an embezzlement scam involving its security guards and tour guides, saying it had reported the case to police.

The museum in the Forbidden City admitted that its security guards and tour guides collaborated to embezzle ticket income, and it had reported to the police and was helping with the investigation, the Beijing Morning Post reported today.

A series of embarrassing incidents exposed by insiders have hurt the image of the Palace Museum, including the theft of nine jewelry boxes and the accidental break of a centuries-old porcelain plate. A retired museum official told the newspaper that the act of insiders reflected an escalating internal conflict in the museum.

The latest allegation said the museum paid 100,000 yuan to a blackmailer who recorded the whole scene of security guards and tour guides embezzling and splitting ticket income in 2009.
