Palace Museum says sorry to partner over stolen treasures

BEIJING Palace Museum today apologized to a Hong Kong museum for the May 8 overnight theft of seven exhibits it borrowed from the latter, Beijing News reported.

All the stolen items, Western-style powder boxes decorated with gems, were on loan from the Liang Yi Zang Museum in Hong Kong and were worth more than tens of millions of yuan.

Palace Museum Spokesman Feng Nai'en made a public apology and said the Palace Museum will take full responsibility and improve its security measures.

Wang Xiayu, curator of the Hong Kong museum, said there are 130 items on display in this exhibition running from April 28 to June 27. Most of the stolen items were the private collections of a Hong Kong banker.

Sources close to the Beijing Public Security Bureau said police had already identified a 27-year-old suspect through the surveillance video.

Despite the theft, Wang said, the exhibition will continue and they will add some new and better items to the show.
