Palace Museum thief appeals court sentence
THE headline-grabbing thief who was sentenced to 13 years in jail and fined 13,000 yuan (US$2,058) for stealing nine exhibits from the Palace Museum in Beijing's Forbidden City appealed to the court verdict this morning.
Shi Baikui, 28, a villager from eastern Shandong Province, realized the sentence was too harsh and lodged an appeal for leniency, his lawyer Huang Changyong told the Legal Evening News.
Though the insured value of the stolen objects is around 410,000 yuan, they have not been verified to be real and worth the value, Huang said.
Huang argued that "it was just a normal theft except for the location" and said the court should have sentenced Shi to less then three years, the report said.
The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court yesterday said the robbery at the Palace Museum was "by destructive means."
