Panda cub born in the semi-wild

A PANDA cub was born this week in southwest Sichuan Province, which panda researchers said is unusual - panda cubs are often born between July and September, not late in autumn.

Sixteen-year-old Fei Fei gave birth to a healthy cub around 2pm on Monday at semi-wild breeding base Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center.

Researchers at the center said yesterday they could not tell whether the cub was male or female as Fei Fei, who has had five other cubs, kept her new offspring close at all times.

The cub was born in a near-wild environment in Bifeng Gorge, a nature reserve in the city of Ya'an, at a panda research center affiliated to the Wolong center.

The birth was monitored by video camera, according to Tang Chunxiang, an expert at the center.

Tang said Fei Fei and her cub would continue to be monitored as it is the first time she has raised a cub in a semi-wild environment.

Fei Fei, born in 1995, received wild training this year. One of her cubs was born on August 8, 2008, the day the Beijing Olympics opened.

This year seven cubs have been born as part of the wild training program at Wolong.
