Panda pair loving life in the frozen north
TWO giant pandas are doing well at their new home in chilly northeast China’s Jilin Province, a spokesman for the Jilin Wild Life Rescue and Breeding Center in Changchun, the provincial capital, said yesterday.
Jia Jia, an 8-year-old male, and Meng Meng, a 7-year-old female, are believed to be the first pandas to thrive in an environment so far north.
“The pandas have remained in good health since they arrived in July, and they seem to like playing in the snow,” said Wang Haijun, director of the center’s animal management department.
“The pandas have no problem living in temperatures around minus 10 degrees Celsius. They looked very excited in the snow and their appetite is also better,” Wang said.
Each panda eats 1.2 kilograms of steamed grain buns, 120 grams of carrots, 150 grams of apples and 5 kilos of bamboo a day, the bamboo shipped from their home province of Sichuan in China’s southwest.
“It costs around 50,000 yuan (US$7,775) to feed the pandas every month,” Wang said.
The pandas will spend three years at the zoo, where researchers will gather data and carry out breeding tests.
